The New Masjid Project

The Muslim community in Orono is a vibrant one and its Masjid hosts several activities throughout the week and all year around. The Friday Khutba starts at 12:30 sharp and prayer is at 1:00 (note this is all year round) members from nearby cities attend filling nearly half of the main prayer hall. Fajar and Isha prayers are held in congregation every day. Weekly halaqas of Tafseer and Hadith are held every Friday for both brothers and sisters. In addition to this every Sunday an Arabic Halaqa is held for brothers. Community potlucks and Qiyam are held once a month. The Islamic weekend school is conducted every Sunday from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. In Ramadan, Iftar, Magrib prayers, and Taraweeh are held every day. During the summer, activities such as sports and community picnics are held. community outreach projects have been initiated and are developing (inshallah). We present Islam to the community at large through outreach to educational facilities, such as schools, universities, hospitals and religious institutions; in addition to interfaith dialogue. Members of the ICMO community regularly work with the Muslim Student Association (MSA) at U-Maine to provide awareness of Islam and Muslims on campus. NEW MASJID PROJECT The current building was constructed to serve the needs of the small number of Muslims prior to 1995. Each year that has passed since then, the Muslim population has grown larger, with more Muslim students choosing UMaine each year. In addition to the student population, more families have also settled in the area. The current building is no longer adequate for the growing community, with potlucks and other special events being packed virtually from wall to wall. Due to the lack of space, Eid celebrations are held at the YMCA and other public facilities.We are requesting donations to assist in replacing the current building with a new masjid. At this time, we have collected approximately $200,000 with the requirement of an additional $400,000. We ask for your generosity in helping us fulfill the need of our Muslim community.
